Incident Overview
A certified flight instructor (CFI) reported that during a training flight in a flight school's designated practice area, she reduced the throttle to idle to simulate an in-flight emergency for her student. The student responded appropriately to the simulated emergency.
Flight Details
While gliding with the throttle at idle, the CFI stated that she cleared the engine using carburetor heat. When the aircraft was between 400 and 500 feet above ground level (AGL), the CFI directed a go-around. The student pilot responded by applying full throttle and turning the carburetor heat off. The engine continued to operate, but no power above idle was obtained.
Aftermath
An examination of the aircraft engine failed to reveal any reason for the loss of power. No mechanical abnormalities were found that could explain the engine's inability to produce power above idle during the go-around.
