Accident Summary
A practice approach using an airport surveillance radar (ASR) procedure ended in a crash when the pilot in command descended below the minimum descent altitude (MDA). The aircraft was equipped with a vision restricting device during the exercise. Recommended altitudes were being issued by air traffic control (ATC).
Flight Details
The safety pilot, who was monitoring the approach, issued a warning about the aircraft's low altitude as it made contact with the terrain. The aircraft crashed in a field approximately one mile from the airport.
Investigation Findings
Following the accident, the altimeter was examined. At the accident site, the altimeter indicated the terrain elevation. Subsequent bench testing of the altimeter revealed no discrepancies in its operation.
