What happened
The rental aircraft departed from Merritt Island, Florida, on March 31, 1985. On the following day, April 1, 1985, the aircraft was located in a crashed state near Rockledge, Florida. The impact with the ground occurred at high velocity in a steep nose-down attitude of approximately 40 degrees.
The investigation
A thorough examination of the wreckage revealed no evidence of pre-existing failure within the airframe or powerplant systems prior to the crash. Interviews conducted with individuals who had accompanied the pilot during the preceding day and night provided critical context regarding his mental state. These witnesses reported that the pilot was emotionally distraught due to apparent medical problems.
Findings
The investigation determined that the mechanical components of the aircraft were functioning normally at the time of impact. The primary contributing factor identified was the pilot's emotional distress related to health issues, which likely impaired his judgment and ability to operate the aircraft safely.
