Accident Overview
An aircraft conducted a forced landing in an open field after the engine stopped due to fuel exhaustion. During the landing roll, the nosewheel struck a ditch, causing the nosewheel to fold. The aircraft came to a stop resting on its nose.
Fuel Calculation and Consumption
Prior to takeoff, the pilot determined the amount of fuel on board by sticking a twig into the fuel tanks. The pilot stated that he believed there were 22 gallons of fuel before departure. The flight lasted 40 minutes. According to published information from the aircraft manufacturer, fuel consumption at 75% power at 1,000 feet is 10 gallons per hour.
Post-Accident Examination
Following the accident, FAA personnel examined the fuel tanks and found no usable fuel remaining.
