Incident Overview
On May 24, 1985, a Cessna 340 executed a gear-up landing off the runway at Centennial Airport in Englewood, Colorado. The flight was planned to include a single-engine ILS approach followed by a two-engine missed approach.
Simulated Engine Failure
During the approach, the flight instructor simulated the loss of the right engine by turning off its fuel supply at the outer marker. The aircraft subsequently initiated a missed approach, but it failed to climb or accelerate properly. The pilot performed a forced landing, during which the landing gear was not extended.
Evidence of Engine Condition
Post-accident examination of the propellers indicated that the left engine was developing high power, while the right engine was producing little or no power. Evidence suggests that the flight instructor inadvertently shut down the right engine, rather than merely simulating its failure.
Injuries
No injuries were reported among the occupants.
