A student pilot who did not obtain wind information entered an approach, experienced a wingtip strike with tree branches during a go-around, then recovered and landed safely.

Incident Details

The student pilot did not obtain surface wind information and did not observe the wind sock prior to the approach. Entering the final approach, the pilot observed no significant drift. The aircraft then achieved a nose-up attitude, at which point it floated and stopped descending for several seconds.

Wingtip Contact

Suddenly, loud whipping noises were heard by the pilot. The pilot observed that the right wingtip was contacting thin branches of small trees. In response, the pilot initiated a go-around attempt. However, the aircraft did not ascend.

Recovery and Landing

After several seconds, the right wingtip became free of the trees. The aircraft then rapidly yawed to the left. The pilot subsequently aligned the aircraft with the runway centerline. The wheels contacted the runway at a nearly level attitude, and the aircraft landed without further incident.
