Overview
The accident occurred during a cross-country flight after an en route stop. The student pilot was taxiing for departure. The aircraft was heading northbound with a left crosswind present.
Sequence of Events
While taxiing, the pilot applied braking action to reduce speed for an upcoming turn. At about that time, the aircraft began to veer to the right. It departed the taxiway, went down an embankment, and entered a ditch. The nose of the aircraft then tipped over, resulting in the aircraft coming to rest inverted.
Pilot Report
The student pilot reported that the brakes and rudder were ineffective in the crosswind conditions. The pilot stated that control inputs did not produce the expected response to maintain directional control during the turn.
Witness Account
A witness who observed the taxi stated that, in their opinion, the pilot was taxiing at an excessive speed. The witness did not provide a specific speed estimation but indicated that the pace seemed too fast for the conditions.
Mechanical Condition
Post-accident inspection found no evidence of any pre-accident part failure or malfunction. The aircraft's braking and rudder systems were reported to have no mechanical deficiencies prior to the event.
