Engine Failure
During a sightseeing flight, the engine lost power at an altitude of 1,200 feet MSL. The pilot selected a divided highway for an emergency landing to the west.
Emergency Landing
The pilot attempted to land on the median strip while overtaking a truck on the westbound lanes. The aircraft encountered the truck's wake turbulence, causing the right wheel to impact the ground hard and separate from the strut.
Wheel Separation and Final Rest
Following the wheel separation, the aircraft veered across the highway and came to rest on the north shoulder, facing almost the opposite direction of travel.
Post-Accident Examination
Inspection of the engine revealed a connecting rod protruding through the engine case. The rod bolts were found to be missing.
