Accident Overview
A student pilot experienced an accident while conducting a supervised solo flight. The aircraft collided vertically with a frozen lake bed after the student attempted a go-around from an over-flared landing approach. The student was a professional musician who had been working steadily for the three days prior to the accident. Toxicological analysis of the student revealed the presence of cocaine, and cocaine was also found in the student's pant pocket.
Background
The student pilot had been having difficulty landing the aircraft, with a reported tendency to over-flare prior to touchdown. The flight instructor devoted a training session specifically to landing technique. After the session, the instructor was satisfied that the student had corrected the problem area and allowed the student to undertake a third supervised solo flight.
Accident Sequence
During the solo flight, the student completed one successful takeoff and landing. The student then acknowledged a desire to perform one more takeoff and landing. On the subsequent landing, the student over-flared, and a go-around was attempted. However, during the go-around, the student entered a departure stall/spin off the departure end of the runway. The aircraft subsequently collided vertically with a frozen lake bed.
Toxicology Findings
Post-accident toxicology results were positive for cocaine. Cocaine was also discovered in the student's pant pocket. The student had been working steadily for three days prior to the accident.
