Flight Details
The aircraft was on a cross-country flight over mountainous terrain. According to the pilot, the first ridge was crossed at approximately 800 feet above ground level (AGL).
Passenger Account
The front seat passenger later stated that he complained several times during the flight that the aircraft was too low. In response, the pilot told him that "the scenery is better down here." The passenger reported that the aircraft never reached a higher altitude than the third ridge.
Final Moments
When the pilot attempted to climb over the third ridge, the airspeed began to drop. The passenger indicated that the pilot maintained a steady course toward the ridge and, just prior to impact, tried to climb more steeply. The stall warning activated, and shortly thereafter, the aircraft impacted trees and the ground.
