Incident Overview
During a local flight, the pilot elected to make a touch-and-go landing on a 2800-foot runway at Lake Dallas, Texas. According to the pilot, the aircraft touched down on the first quarter of the runway. He then lowered the nose, retracted the flaps, and applied full power for takeoff.
Aborted Takeoff and Runway Excursion
During the takeoff roll, the pilot reported that there was insufficient increase in speed, leading him to abort the takeoff. Unable to stop on the remaining runway, he angled the aircraft to the left to avoid a dyke. However, after leaving the runway, the right wing of the aircraft struck a guy wire, causing the aircraft to veer back to the right and hit the dyke.
Contributing Factors Identified by Pilot
The pilot acknowledged that he did not check the weight and balance before taking off with three passengers and a full load of fuel. He believed that the accident occurred because the aircraft was overweight. Additionally, he noted that the runway at Lake Dallas was 2200 feet shorter than the runway at the departure airport.
Pilot's Assessment
The pilot attributed the accident to the aircraft being overweight, emphasizing his failure to perform a weight and balance check prior to the flight.
