A student pilot leveled off high during landing and added power to slow descent, causing the aircraft to drift left before a wheel caught snow and flipped the plane.

What happened

During the final phase of a training flight, the student pilot initiated the landing maneuver but established a level-off altitude that was significantly higher than standard procedure. In an effort to correct the excessive height and reduce the vertical speed, the pilot applied additional engine power.

This input caused the aircraft to drift laterally to the left side of the runway environment. Recognizing the deviation, the pilot considered aborting the landing to execute a go-around. However, before the necessary power adjustments could be fully implemented or the maneuver initiated, the left main landing gear wheel struck accumulated snow on the ground.

The impact with the snow caused the left wheel to dig in abruptly, resulting in the aircraft flipping over onto its side.

Probable cause

The pilot's decision to level off at an excessive altitude during landing and the subsequent application of power, which led to a lateral drift and contact with snow that caused the aircraft to flip.
