Event Details
The pilot reported that the preflight engine run-up was satisfactory. Shortly after takeoff, the engine faltered briefly. The pilot attempted a landing back on the runway. Upon establishing a point to land, the engine responded, causing the aircraft to overshoot the intended landing area. The engine faltered once again, and the pilot was able to make a forced landing in an open field just off the departure end of the runway.
Post-Incident Inspection
Inspection of the engine after several attempts to duplicate the engine malfunction failed to provide evidence that would conclusively determine what caused the failure.
Conclusion
The engine malfunction could not be reproduced or identified during post-incident inspection. No definitive cause was established.
