What happened
The accident occurred on a short, unpaved airfield where the available runway surface measured only 1,300 feet in length. Conditions included a quartering crosswind of 5 knots with gusts reaching 20 knots. During the landing roll, the flight instructor reported experiencing a sudden wind shift that affected aircraft control and performance.
As the aircraft approached the end of the usable runway surface, it encountered a soft spot in the ground. This irregularity significantly reduced forward momentum and braking efficiency just as the plane was nearing the perimeter barrier. Unable to stop within the remaining distance, the aircraft's elevator and horizontal stabilizer struck a barbed wire fence located at the edge of the airfield.
The impact with the fence caused the airplane to veer off the paved or graded path and come to rest in a ditch situated between the fence line and an adjacent road. The force of the collision with the barrier and the subsequent drop into the ditch resulted in substantial damage to the aircraft structure.
