Incident Overview
According to the pilot, the aircraft touched down approximately 10 feet to the right of the runway centerline. After rolling about 50 yards, the pilot heard a bump and the aircraft veered to the right. The tower controller, however, reported that the aircraft touched down on the grass to the right of the runway. Subsequently, the right wing struck a runway distant marker, causing the aircraft to pitch up on its nose before coming to rest in the grassy area.
Witness Accounts
The pilot’s account differs from the tower controller’s observation. The pilot stated the initial touchdown was on the runway surface, while the controller noted the touchdown occurred entirely off the runway in the grass. Both accounts agree that the aircraft veered right after the bump and ended up in the grass.
Meteorological Conditions
Wind conditions around the time of the landing were variable, ranging from 240 to 300 degrees at 7 to 14 knots. Just before landing, the wind was reported from 240 degrees at 8 knots.
