Overview
A non-instrument rated pilot was on a flight to position an aircraft for skydiving activities. While transiting the Albany Airport radar service area at 5,500 feet, radio and radar contact were lost. The aircraft subsequently crashed in a steep dive and was demolished by impact.
Weather Conditions
Personnel in the area reported an overcast condition and estimated visibility was at least 1 mile. Approximately 12 miles east-southeast, the 0750 Albany weather included 1,200 feet scattered, 6,000 feet broken, visibility 2 miles with fog. Low clouds at the reporting station had lifted by the time of the accident.
Radar Data
Radar data showed the aircraft deviated in both heading and altitude from 5,500 feet, then entered a dive with course reversals. Primary radar targets appeared just before radar contact was lost.
Aircraft Damage
Both wing tips separated in flight but were not found. Pieces of wing skin were found up to 400 yards away. Large droop wing tips were reportedly installed, but no authorization was found for such installation.
Pilot Medical Information
A pathological examination showed the pilot had "moderate mild coronary arteriosclerosis." The possibility of an antemortem cardiac ischemia could not be ruled out. The pilot had previously been treated for a suspected heart condition.
