Flight and Weather
A pilot departed Jacksonville under visual flight rules without first obtaining a weather briefing. While en route, she observed thunderstorm activity and decided to return to Jacksonville. By the time she arrived back, the weather had deteriorated and the wind had shifted to the south. The wind sock was fully extended, indicating an estimated wind velocity of about 20 knots.
Landing Sequence
During an attempted landing on Runway 27, the aircraft bounced and the pilot lost directional control. Subsequently, the aircraft struck a ditch and sustained damage.
Aircraft and Pilot Information
The pilot's operating handbook stated that with average pilot technique, a direct crosswind of up to 15 knots could be handled with safety. The pilot estimated that the wind was gusting to 30 knots.
