Incident Overview
The pilot of a Cessna 152, registration N93193, taxied for takeoff with the intention of using Runway 24. At the same time, a U.S. Navy H-53 (Sikorsky) helicopter entered a landing pattern for the same runway. As the heavy helicopter approached to land, the Cessna pilot accepted an offer to take off from Runway 29, but was instructed to remain clear of Runway 24.
Sequence of Events
The pilot was cleared for takeoff on Runway 29 and subsequently informed that a three-minute hold for wake turbulence behind the helicopter would have been required. To reach the takeoff position on Runway 29, the pilot taxied onto the edge of Runway 24 and then turned onto Runway 29 at the intersection of the two runways. The Cessna stopped and held on Runway 29, with the tail of the aircraft positioned near the right edge of Runway 24.
The H-53 was cleared to land on Runway 24, behind the Cessna. The Cessna pilot continued to hold near Runway 24. Immediately thereafter, the Cessna was overturned by the downwash from the heavy helicopter.
Outcome
The Cessna 152 was overturned by the helicopter's downwash while holding on the runway. No further details were provided.
