Aircraft
Two aircraft were involved in a ground collision at a general aviation airport: a North American P-51D (registration N6341T) and a Piper PA-28 Cherokee (registration N8253E).
Sequence of Events
The pilot of the P-51D was taxiing southbound on Taxiway Alpha. The aircraft, equipped with a tailwheel, was performing S-turns to clear the area ahead. Meanwhile, the pilot of the PA-28 had taxied from a run-up area to the hold line for Runway 33, which was near the intersection of Taxiways Alpha and India.
As the P-51D crossed the intersection of Taxiways Alpha and India during a left S-turn, its right wing struck the empennage of the stationary or slow-moving PA-28. The PA-28 pilot reported that he had initially contacted Ground Control before taxiing from the run-up area to the hold line, then switched to the Tower frequency. However, he delayed contacting the tower due to radio congestion on that frequency.
The P-51D pilot stated that from a distance, he observed another aircraft moving west across his path, but he did not receive an advisory regarding the close proximity of the PA-28.
Recordings
Review of the tower audio recording revealed that the ground controller had transmitted to the P-51D pilot: "Caution for Cherokee ahead and to your right."
Damage
The PA-28 sustained substantial damage, while the P-51D received minor damage.
Statements
