After takeoff, the pilot noted a loss of oil pressure and returned. During a go-around following a ballooned approach, the engine lost power. The aircraft struck a utility pole and a multi-family dwelling, then burned. Investigators found a failed connecting rod and low oil.

Accident Summary

Shortly after takeoff, the pilot observed a loss of oil pressure and decided to return to the airport. As the aircraft was returning, the engine began to overspeed, but the pilot controlled the RPM by retarding the throttle. The wind was from 150 degrees at 10 knots. The pilot was cleared to enter traffic for Runway 13L but chose to land in the opposite direction, resulting in a tailwind landing. While on short final approach to Runway 31R, the aircraft ballooned, and the pilot initiated a go-around. During the go-around, the engine lost power. Subsequently, the aircraft collided with a utility pole, then crashed into a multi-family dwelling and burned.

Investigation Findings

Examination revealed oil residue on the left side and bottom of the fuselage. A teardown of the engine showed that the No. 4 connecting rod had failed. Only about half a pint of oil was found in the engine. Due to impact and fire damage, the reason for the loss of oil was not determined.
