Incident Overview
A pilot reported that while on short final approach to runway 36, approximately 5 to 6 feet above ground level and over the runway threshold, he observed another aircraft approaching from the opposite direction. In response, he initiated a climbing right turn and subsequently collided with a tree located about 150 feet to the right of the runway centerline.
Witness Observations
Witnesses at the airport indicated that the wind conditions favored the use of runway 18, the opposite direction. They further noted that the proximity of the two aircraft was not considered a contributing factor to the accident.
Other Pilot's Account
The pilot of the other aircraft stated that a UNICOM operator advised him that the wind favored runway 18. He reported transmitting his position on the UNICOM frequency while on base and final legs for runway 18. He added that he observed the accident aircraft, registration N7970B, shortly after it lifted off from runway 36. According to his account, the aircraft appeared to have an unusually high angle of attack, then entered a right bank, and subsequently appeared to stall.
