Incident Overview
A pilot reported that he was using outdated charts for his destination airport and failed to notice a new runway. He also did not see the yellow X's marking the closure of the old runway, which was nearly parallel to the active runway, within ten degrees of heading.
Sequence of Events
The pilot landed on the closed runway. During the landing roll, he observed a snow bank, approximately 2 to 3 feet high, crossing his path. He added power, flew over the obstacle, and relanded on the other side. Believing he could not stop in the remaining distance, he elected to abort the landing and go around.
Final Outcome
During the go-around, the pilot was unable to clear the fence at the airport boundary. The nose gear caught the wires, causing the aircraft to flip over. The aircraft sustained substantial damage.
Pilot Report
The pilot stated that his use of outdated charts led to his failure to notice the new runway and the closed runway markings. He did not specify the aircraft type, registration, or other details in the report.
