Accident Details
The pilot reported that the flight was about 15 miles from its destination and had been diverted because of haze. While cruising at an altitude of approximately 2,000 feet, the engine stopped operating for non-mechanical reasons. Attempts to restart the engine were unsuccessful.
Landing and Collision
The pilot executed a landing on a road. During this maneuver, the right wingtip contacted a road sign, causing the aircraft to spin to the right. The airplane then departed the roadway, struck trees, and eventually came to rest.
Post-Crash Inspection
A post-crash examination of the aircraft indicated that the right fuel tank was devoid of usable fuel. The pilot stated that after the accident, he added fuel to the left tank in an effort to restart the engine. Therefore, the amount of fuel present in the left tank at the moment power was lost could not be established.
Pilot Statement
The pilot further noted that it is possible the engine failure was a result of fuel exhaustion.
