Preliminaries
The event took place during an instructional flight that was on final approach to Runway 17. Prior to touchdown, the flight was advised that the wind was from 110 degrees at 15 knots, with gusts to 20 knots. The certified flight instructor (CFI) stated that the aircraft was slow on final approach. At the time, the aircraft had 20 degrees of flaps extended.
Sequence of Events
As the aircraft continued its final approach, it was displaced to the right side of the runway by the crosswind. In response, the student pilot applied a control input to the left. This input was excessive, causing the aircraft to overcorrect and move left across the runway centerline. The aircraft then departed the left side of the runway. Immediately after leaving the runway surface, the aircraft stalled and subsequently collided with trees.
