Incident Overview
A helicopter on a ferry flight from Alpine, Wyoming, to Belfield, North Dakota, experienced an engine failure after the pilot became lost. The pilot departed Alpine at approximately 0950 and made several enroute stops to refuel. The intended refueling stop was Miles City, Montana, but the pilot got lost and instead flew to Terry, Montana, located 38 miles east of Miles City.
Emergency Landing
The pilot stated that an engine failure occurred, and he executed an autorotation. During the emergency landing, he had to avoid power lines, which resulted in a loss of rotor RPM. The aircraft subsequently landed hard.
Examination of Wreckage
Examination of the wreckage revealed several quarts of fuel in the fuel tanks.
