Incident Overview
A private pilot-in-command (PIC) was occupying the right seat while a commercial pilot-passenger was in the left seat. The PIC was controlling the aircraft during a final approach. According to the pilot, the wind was from 170 degrees (velocity not reported). The carburetor heat was engaged, full flaps (30 degrees) were deployed, and an approach speed of 60–65 knots indicated airspeed was maintained.
Sequence of Events
Approximately one-half to three-quarters of a mile from the runway threshold, the aircraft assumed an abnormal nose-low attitude. The PIC responded by adding power but did not use elevator control, as he wanted to avoid inducing a stall. The increased power had no effect on the nose-low attitude. The PIC then applied full power for a go-around. He reported no recollection of events after that point.
Accident Location and Damage
The aircraft crashed 75 feet short and 60 feet left of the runway centerline.
