Accident Overview
An aircraft crashed into trees at the end of the runway while on initial climb after experiencing a complete engine failure. The accident occurred shortly after takeoff.
Post-Accident Engine Testing
Following the accident, FAA personnel attempted to test-run the engine but were unable to do so due to an air leak on the gascolator. When upward pressure was applied to the bottom of the gascolator to seal the air leak, normal engine operation was achieved. According to FAA personnel, the leakage was likely due to a worn seal and not a result of impact damage caused by the accident.
Investigation Findings
The investigation focused on the engine failure and the subsequent discovery of the gascolator air leak. The exact cause of the initial engine failure was not determined, but the post-accident testing indicated a pre-existing issue with the gascolator seal.
