Incident Overview
During a landing attempt on a 900-foot long dirt runway in crosswind conditions, a pilot decided that his approach was too high and his airspeed excessive. He therefore initiated a go-around. However, during the go-around, the aircraft was unable to clear a dirt embankment, and the nose wheel struck the embankment.
Subsequent Flight and Landing
Unaware of the extent of damage to the nose landing gear, the pilot continued the climb and re-entered the traffic pattern to land on an alternate runway, which was aligned into the wind. During the landing rollout on this runway, the nosegear collapsed, causing the aircraft to pitch nose-down. The propeller and left wing sustained damage as a result.
Damage
The aircraft sustained damage to the propeller and left wing following the nosegear collapse during the landing rollout.
