A pilot ferrying a Cessna 172N for maintenance landed on a taxiway after finding the runway closed. Both tires blew out due to excessive braking, leading to loss of control and collision with a parked truck and fence.

Incident

The pilot was ferrying the airplane to obtain scheduled maintenance. Upon arrival over the airport, he discovered that the only runway was closed for maintenance. He then elected to land on a taxiway. After touchdown, he applied the brakes firmly during a short-field landing. Both tires blew out during the landing roll, resulting in a loss of control. The airplane subsequently collided with a parked truck and a fence.

Investigation

Examination of the airplane's tires revealed that they had blown out as a result of excessive braking. The distance from the taxiway entrance at the runway edge to the truck was approximately 500 feet. Several hangars and other obstacles were located off the end of the taxiway along the airplane's initial direction of travel. Review of a Cessna 172N information manual indicated that about 500 feet was required for the landing roll under the conditions reported by the pilot.

A Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) (D) advising of the closed runway had been issued two days earlier and was in effect at the time of the accident.

Probable cause

Excessive braking caused the tires to blow out, leading to loss of control and collision with a parked truck and a fence.
