A small aircraft encountered wake turbulence during takeoff behind a Navy P-3 making a low approach, resulting in a collision with the runway.

Incident Details

The pilot taxied the aircraft to Runway 6 and performed an engine run-up. While contacting the tower for takeoff clearance, a Navy P-3 aircraft was conducting a low approach to Runway 10. The pilot was instructed to taxi to Runway 10. Approximately 30 seconds later, upon arrival at Runway 10, the pilot received takeoff clearance and was cautioned about wake turbulence from the P-3.

Sequence of Events

The pilot took off on Runway 10 and maneuvered to avoid wake turbulence. As the aircraft was climbing through approximately 100 feet, it rolled violently to the right. The pilot applied corrective action, but the aircraft descended and struck the runway before recovery could be achieved.

Wake Turbulence Considerations

The Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM) and FAA Advisory Circular 90-23D warned of wake turbulence hazards and recommended a 2-minute interval when a small aircraft departs behind a large aircraft. The tower controller complied with applicable ATC directives. Paragraph 3-106i of ATC Handbook 7110.65F required a 3-minute separation for a small aircraft behind a large aircraft taking off or making a low/missed approach when utilizing opposite direction takeoffs on the same runway, unless the pilot requested a deviation, in which case a wake turbulence advisory was to be issued. However, the handbook did not address takeoffs behind same-direction low approaches.
