Accident Sequence
The aircraft was taxied to the far end of the 1,860-foot runway. The pilot in command applied full power and initiated a takeoff roll to the south. According to an eyewitness, the aircraft gained speed, lifted off the ground, and the witness then looked away. The witness subsequently heard the aircraft strike a runway end marker, which consisted of three pallets wired in a pyramid shape. Following the impact, the aircraft pitched nose-high and entered a steep left bank, as if turning back toward the airport. The aircraft then crashed several hundred yards east of the departure end of the runway in an open field.
Damage and Investigation
The elevator control surface sustained major damage during the takeoff, which restricted its movement and ultimately led to a loss of aircraft control. Investigators discovered no pre-existing mechanical failure with either the aircraft engine or flight controls.
Conclusions
The elevator control surface was damaged during the takeoff roll, limiting its travel and resulting in a loss of aircraft control. No other mechanical anomalies were found.
