Accident Overview
During a night flight conducted under visual flight rules (VFR) while operating on an instrument flight rules (IFR) flight plan, the aircraft experienced an engine malfunction. The pilot reported that the engine began running roughly, accompanied by a noticeable loss of oil pressure. Cockpit troubleshooting procedures were attempted, and air traffic control (ATC) provided vectors to an alternate airport, but these efforts were unsuccessful. The engine subsequently failed completely, and the pilot executed a forced landing at night with the landing gear retracted in a plowed corn field.
Post-Accident Examination
Following the accident, a thorough examination of the aircraft was conducted. Oil streaks were observed along the left side of the fuselage, extending from the engine compartment to the tail section. The engine was inspected and subsequently torn down. The inspection revealed a hole in the crankcase at the No. 3 cylinder location, as well as a hole in the No. 2 cylinder piston at the piston rings. The engine oil system contained virtually no usable oil. Additionally, metal debris was found throughout the oil system, and there were signs of overheating consistent with oil exhaustion.
