Incident Description

During a flight of a Lockheed L-1011-385-1, a weld at a slip joint of the pneumatic dual compensator for the No. 2 engine separated in the mid-cargo compartment area. This separation allowed bleed air from the engine to escape, which activated the fire warning light circuitry in that area and alerted the cockpit crew.

Maintenance History

This event is the third known separation of this specific unit. These pneumatic compensator units are part of the C-phase inspection schedule for the aircraft.
