Incident Overview
A cross-country flight experienced a total loss of engine power due to non-mechanical causes. The pilot had been operating with the left fuel tank selected, which was later found depleted of usable fuel at the accident site. The right fuel tank contained approximately three-quarters full of clean, usable fuel. Following the power loss, the fuel pump cavitated as a result of fuel exhaustion. The pilot attempted to restart the engine during the forced landing but was unable to do so, citing insufficient time and altitude.
Sequence of Events
The aircraft was vectored to the nearest airport after the power loss. However, during the approach, the aircraft struck a tree and then impacted terrain approximately three statute miles short of the runway. No mechanical issues were identified with the fuel system or engine; the loss of power was solely attributed to fuel exhaustion from the selected tank.
Post-Accident Findings
Examination of the aircraft at the accident site confirmed that the left fuel tank contained no usable fuel, while the right tank held ample fuel. The pilot's selection of the left tank throughout the latter portion of the flight led to the depletion of that tank. The fuel pump cavitated when the left tank ran dry, preventing any immediate restart. The pilot's attempt to restart the engine was unsuccessful given the circumstances.
