Incident Overview
The pilot reported being unable to lower the flaps before landing. He elected to land on runway 35, which was 3,801 feet in length, despite the availability of runway 31, which was 6,451 feet long.
Landing and Accident Sequence
During the landing on runway 35, the airplane touched down approximately one-third of the way down the runway with a high ground speed. To avoid an overrun, the pilot attempted to turn off at the end of the runway onto a taxiway. During the turn, the airplane skidded, and the main landing gear collapsed.
Post-Incident Findings
After the incident, the flap motor was tested and found to be inoperative. The pilot stated that when he exited the airplane, he noticed a tailwind of 10 to 15 knots.
