On March 18, 1990, a Cessna 182 (registration N5322B) operated by Fayard Enterprises, Inc. was involved in an aviation accident near Louisburg, NC. Investigators recorded the probable cause as: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during takeoff, which resulted in the left main wheel striking a runway drag sled and the subsequent departure from the runway. This summary draws on records from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) historical archive; 8 related events involving the same aircraft type or operator are linked below.
During the takeoff roll, the pilot lost directional control due to wind gusts and mud, causing the left wheel to strike a runway drag sled and veer into a ditch.
What happened
The pilot reported that during the takeoff roll, the airplane began to veer to the left. To counteract this drift, the pilot applied right rudder while simultaneously applying full right aileron. Despite these control inputs, the aircraft continued to drift off the runway centerline due to a combination of wind gusts and mud on the side of the runway.
The left main wheel struck a 'runway drag-sled' that had been left on or near the runway surface. The impact caused the object to separate from the airplane. Following this collision, the aircraft veered further off the paved surface and came to rest in an adjacent ditch.
Probable cause
The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during takeoff, which resulted in the left main wheel striking a runway drag sled and the subsequent departure from the runway.
