An aircraft experienced a loss of engine power during the initial climb phase, prompting an emergency landing in a field adjacent to the runway due to water contamination in the fuel system.

What happened

During the initial takeoff climb, the aircraft encountered a sudden loss of engine power at an altitude of approximately 50 to 100 feet above ground level. The pilot reported that the passenger, who was also rated as a pilot, assumed control of the airplane. In response to the mechanical failure, the individual banked the aircraft to execute an emergency landing in a field located along the right side of the runway. During this maneuver, the airplane contacted the terrain with its right wing.

The investigation

A post-accident inspection of the wreckage revealed significant contamination within the fuel system. Examiners found water present in both the left and right fuel tanks as well as inside the carburetor. This contamination is consistent with the reported loss of power during the climb phase.

Probable cause

Water contamination in the fuel system, which resulted in a loss of engine power during takeoff.
