Approach and Wind Conditions
The pilot initiated an instrument approach to Runway 26 at the destination airport. The weather at the time included a heavy snowstorm with wind from 320 degrees at 40 knots, gusting to 60 knots.
Decision to Circle
After evaluating his altitude above the runway and the wind conditions, the pilot decided to perform a circling maneuver to land on Runway 31.
Loss of Control
As the pilot began a left turn, he reported losing control of the airplane. Despite his attempts to regain control, the airplane descended and struck the ground.
Icing and Mechanical Factors
The pilot stated that the airplane was accumulating ice rapidly during the approach. There was no claim or evidence of any mechanical malfunction.
