Accident Overview
An aircraft departed with the pilot and three passengers. The airplane was estimated to be approximately 120 pounds over its certificated maximum gross weight. About six minutes after takeoff, the aircraft collided with mountainous terrain at an elevation of about 4,200 feet mean sea level.
Post-Accident Examination
On-scene examination of the airframe and engine revealed no pre-existing mechanical problems. The aircraft's climb performance was calculated by an FAA operations inspector. The inspector determined that the aircraft did not have the ability to depart the airport, fly directly to the accident location, and clear the mountainous terrain.
Witness and Pilot Statements
One passenger reported that the aircraft's engine was running fine, but that the aircraft could not clear the terrain. The pilot stated that the engine had failed. No other contributing factors were identified in the investigation.
