An aircraft and its pilot disappeared from Inverness Airport in Florida in April 1992, leading to a search that was eventually terminated due to suspected criminal activity.

What happened

On April 19, 1992, at approximately 1300 EDT, the pilot and his aircraft were last seen at the Inverness Airport in Inverness, Florida. During a ramp search conducted the following morning at 0900, the aircraft could not be located, and there was no record of the aircraft departing the airport.

The pilot was reported missing on the morning of April 20 by his secretary. A search operation was initiated the next day by the captain; however, the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC) in Illinois called off the search three days later. The decision to terminate the search was based on possible criminal involvement.

Prior to his disappearance, the pilot had expressed concerns to his father regarding threats against his life and a contract out to kill him. At the time, the pilot worked for a collection agency that was undergoing a merger with another firm, a situation that caused him professional concern.

The aircraft was not recovered and is presumed destroyed. The pilot is presumed fatally injured.
