Incident Overview
A student pilot was conducting solo flight requirements in the traffic pattern as part of an instructional syllabus. During the climb on the crosswind leg, the engine began to vibrate. The pilot leveled the aircraft and chose to maintain the crosswind heading instead of turning downwind for landing, while attempting to diagnose the engine problem.
Inflight Actions
As the pilot continued adjusting the fuel mixture and applying carburetor heat, the airplane began losing altitude. The pilot then set up for a forced landing. During the descent toward an open area, the airplane impacted trees.
Post-Accident Findings
Examination after the accident revealed a fractured push rod assembly on the number three cylinder.
