On August 10, 1992, a Piper PA-24-250 (registration N119Q) operated by Stone, Steve L. was involved in an aviation accident near Brooksville, FL. Investigators recorded the probable cause as: THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN ALIGNMENT WITH THE RUNWAY DURING LANDING. THIS RESULTED IN AN IN-FLIGHT COLLISION WITH A RUNWAY MARKER, COLLAPSE OF THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR, AND SUBSEQUENT COLLISION WITH TERRAIN. This summary draws on records from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) historical archive.
During a night VFR approach, a private pilot's airplane hit a runway marker, causing the right main landing gear to collapse. The airplane sustained substantial damage but the pilot was uninjured.
Incident Details
A private pilot was conducting a night approach for landing under visual flight rules (VFR) conditions. During the landing, the airplane's right main landing gear collided with a runway marker located between the landing runway and an adjacent taxiway. After the collision, the airplane remained airborne for approximately 300 feet before coming to a complete stop in a grass median.
Investigation Findings
Inspection of the crash site by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) revealed that the right main landing gear had struck the runway marker. The airplane sustained substantial damage as a result of the incident.
Pilot Statement
The pilot reported that upon landing, the right main landing gear collapsed, causing the airplane to slide off the runway onto the grass. The pilot was not injured in the accident.
