Incident Details
A student pilot was conducting a touch-and-go landing when, after touchdown, he retracted the flaps, removed carburetor heat, and applied full power. As the airplane reached rotational speed, it began an uncontrolled left turn, according to the pilot. The flight instructor, who was observing the takeoff, confirmed the aircraft's behavior. The airplane subsequently departed the runway edge and came to rest east of the runway's taxiway.
Pilot Training
When asked if he had received training in aborted takeoffs, the student pilot stated he could not recall. Examination of his logbook revealed no entries indicating such training had been conducted.
Instructor's Practices
The student's flight instructor was asked whether he taught aborted takeoffs at or below rotation speed. The instructor stated that he did not, explaining that he considered such training too dangerous.
