Incident Overview
A student pilot, under the supervision of a certified flight instructor (CFI), was performing a landing. The landing itself was unremarkable; the airplane touched down normally and began its roll-out along the runway.
Sequence of Events
During the landing roll-out, the student pilot applied brakes unevenly. This caused the airplane to veer off the paved surface. The airplane exited the runway and subsequently collided with a runway sign situated alongside.
Instructor Intervention
The CFI, who was present in the cockpit, admonished the student to be mindful of the uneven braking application. However, the CFI did not take control of the airplane until it became evident to him that the student had lost control of the aircraft. By that time, the airplane had already left the runway and struck the sign.
