A student pilot lost directional control during the landing roll of a crosswind approach, causing the aircraft to leave the runway surface and strike a precision approach path indicator.

What happened

During the final phase of flight, the student pilot was conducting an approach with the intention of landing. As the aircraft neared the runway threshold, a right crosswind component became evident. The pilot noted that just prior to touchdown, the airplane drifted laterally to the left of the runway centerline due to this wind condition.

Although the pilot attempted to correct the drift during the flare and touchdown, directional control was not maintained throughout the landing roll. Consequently, the aircraft departed the paved surface of the runway. While exiting the runway environment, the airplane struck a precision approach path indicator located near the runway edge.

Probable cause

The student pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll in crosswind conditions, which resulted in the aircraft departing the runway and striking an obstacle.
