Incident Details

An airplane experienced a runway excursion after the pilot attempted to stop following an aborted go-around. The aircraft ran off the end of the runway and went down a 12-foot embankment before coming to a stop.

Pilot Report

The pilot reported that after touching down on Runway 23, he decided his speed was too high and that a go-around would be appropriate. He began to add power, retracted the flaps, and keyed the microphone to alert the control tower of his intentions. However, he then noticed what he believed to be a helicopter at low altitude in close proximity to his left, moving in the direction of his planned flight path. He decided to try to stop the aircraft, reduced power, and began to apply the brakes. He reached the end of the runway at slow speed but could not stop before running off the runway.

Witness Account

A witness reported that the airplane touched down about two-thirds of the length of the runway.
