Summary

A pilot experienced a sudden loss of engine power during takeoff from a private field, resulting in a forced landing that ended with the airplane striking pine trees.

Details

According to the pilot, pre-takeoff and run-up checks were completed successfully. As the airplane climbed to approximately 250 feet above the ground, the engine RPM dropped from full power to idle. The pilot attempted to restart the engine but was unsuccessful. In preparation for the forced landing, the pilot pulled back on the yoke to cushion the impact, and the airplane subsequently struck several pine trees.

Several witnesses reported hearing the airplane's engine sound intermittently during the takeoff before it impacted the trees.

Following the accident, FAA inspectors examined the airplane. The left fuel tank contained 25 gallons of fuel, and the right fuel tank contained 5 gallons. The fuel selector was positioned on the left tank.

No further findings regarding the cause of the power loss were reported.
