During landing at night, the electrical system failed after the landing light was turned on. The airplane struck trees but landed. Post-accident examination revealed a broken field wire terminal.

Accident Sequence

Approximately 15-20 minutes before the accident, a student pilot in the left forward seat reported that the low voltage light for the LORAN unit was illuminated. The pilot responded by recycling the alternator switch. The rotating beacon at the destination airport was observed as the flight entered the traffic pattern for landing.

While on final approach, the pilot turned on the landing light, at which point the electrical system failed. The airplane subsequently collided with trees but was able to land.

Post-Accident Examination

During a ferry flight following the accident, the ammeter for the electrical system showed erratic charging and discharging. Examination of the electrical system revealed that the field wire was broken at the terminal end. The electrical system had previous discrepancies, but the reason for the malfunction could not be determined.

Runway Information

The threshold is displaced 200 feet due to trees. The usable length of the runway is shortened from 5,000 to 4,500 feet at night. A VASI is not installed for the runway used.
