Introduction

A pilot experienced a total loss of engine power at 100 feet above ground level during takeoff. The flight was intended to deliver the airplane for its annual inspection. The subsequent forced landing resulted in the airplane stalling and contacting the runway in a nose-down attitude.

Sequence of Events

The pilot was conducting a takeoff when, at an altitude of 100 feet AGL, the engine completely lost power. Unable to maintain flight, the pilot initiated a forced landing. During the landing attempt, the airplane stalled and struck the runway with its nose down.

Preflight and Fuel Contamination

The airplane, which was approved for autogas under a supplemental type certificate, had not been flown for several months. During preflight, the airplane was parked on a slope. The pilot did not drain any water from the fuel tanks. However, the pilot reported observing a pale, 1/2-inch layer at the bottom of the clear gascolator bowl.

Post-Accident Findings

Immediately after the accident, inspection of the fuel system revealed approximately 1/4 inch of ice inside the gascolator. Fuel samples taken from the tanks contained water and particulates.
