What happened
The flight instructor for a student pilot reported endorsing the student for solo flight operations. After providing the endorsement, the instructor entered the control tower to observe the initial solo flight from an elevated vantage point. The student successfully completed two landing cycles without any reported issues or irregularities.
During the third landing attempt, the aircraft was flared at an excessive height above the runway surface. This improper technique caused the airplane to bounce upon initial contact with the pavement. The pilot failed to recover effectively, resulting in the aircraft porpoising along the runway length. This sequence of events placed significant stress on the airframe.
The investigation
Post-incident examination revealed structural damage to the forward fuselage area. The repeated vertical loads from the bounce and subsequent porpoising caused the firewall to buckle. No other mechanical failures were noted prior to the landing event.
